Elmhurst History

In 1836, Europeans settled in the area which is now call Elmhurst. At the time, the prairie land attracted many of the settlers. The small community began to grow, until it was officially called Cottage Hill in 1845 upon the establishment of a post office. Four years after, the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad ran through the town, providing convenient rail access for farmers, their produce and residents. In 1869 the community changed its name to Elmhurst.

In 1882, the village had a population of 1,050. As the population grew, so were the services provided to the village such as police protection, a volunteer fire department, sewers, and plank sidewalks. Elmhurst population grew from 4,594 to 14,055 during the 1920's. Many of the institutions were also established during the time like the Elmhurst Park District and Elmhurst Hospital.
